DECEMBER SCHOOL NEWS

ÍY SȻÁĆEL Prospect Lake Parents and Guardians,

RECENT SCHOOL NEWS

Our November school focus was on Courage. Throughout the month, teachers, EA and adults focused on encouraging, recognizing, and celebrating when students show courage, because they might not realize they’re doing it. Keep on the lookout and celebrate courageous things your child is trying at home. Courage tied in well with Remembrance Day. Our students and staff can be commended for a wonderful whole school assembly where students shared poems, songs and stories to honor Canadians who have served and are serving our country for peace.  Thank you to students James and Claire who were the masters of ceremony and did an excellent job showing courage with public speaking.

Soccer  Congratulations to our Grade ⅘ soccer team who participated in the district soccer jamboree at Claremont.  We are proud of the sportsmanship and how well our students played.  Thank you to Mrs. Harward, Ms Gregory, Mr. Goodyear and Mr. MacDonald who supported the team at practices and the jamboree.

Swim Club Another great example of bravery and trying something new.  Our Grade 3,4,5 Swim club participated in their first swim meet on Sunday Nov 27 at Commonwealth Pool.  Although there were some nerves trying their first events, swimmers were able to work through it and then there were so many great smiles throughout the morning. Congratulations!

Paws Pick Updates- Thank you Paws Pick members for their help with the Book Fair, which was very well attended.  Much appreciation for parent volunteers, Mrs. Bourdon and Ms. Unger for their help organizing.

Report Cards:  Families should expect Term 1 report cards next week. As a Principal, it is always a pleasure to read these reports as they are thoughtfully put together to share your child’s progress.    Those new to report cards will see that Core Competencies are assessed and the Proficiency Scale is used as descriptors of performance of those competencies and curriculum areas. Here is a link that explains core

DECEMBER EVENTS

Our school virtue for the month of December will be Generosity.  We are encouraging our students to do thoughtful things for others.  This could be done through efforts with giving kind words, time or donations of money or something meaningful or positive attention to others.

This year Prospect Lake classrooms would like to participate in a local campaign through Extreme Outreach called Warm- A-Soul.  The goal is to create stockings for families in need. The Timeline will be Dec 1-9.  Each class will be collecting items for stockings for an age group.  Stay tuned for a message from the classroom teacher. Below is a list of recommended items.  We are going to see how many stockings (worth about $20 each) can be created with the items donated.

WINTER CONCERT: We are excited to host a winter concert the afternoon of December 15. Our students have begun practicing with their music teacher, Mr. Jung and their classroom teachers in preparation.

To accommodate an audience and capacity limits, we have divided our classes into two groups.  Please have a look below for your child(ren)’s class and performance time.  We have very limited parking so please park at Prospect Lake Hall or Whitehead Park.  There are sidewalks to make the walk safe.  After watching the performances, we ask that the children remain with their class until regular dismissal time so we can navigate two performance times.

We would like to support our school community families for the holiday season.    If you would like to contribute please bring either non-perishable food items or a monetary donation to purchase gift cards.

FAMILY CRAFT- MITTEN PROJECT

The PAWS Squad has been working hard to get ready for the upcoming concert. We would like to invite your family to take part in our Annual Prospect Lake Elementary Winter Family Fun Project.  Keep an eye out for a fun family project coming your way Dec 7 .

PARENT INFORMATION

Wet/Cold Weather: As we get more wet and cold weather, families are asked to have their children dressed appropriately to go outside. A full change of clothes in their backpacks is also helpful for all students, should they need to change.

Lost and Found: Please have your child look through the lost and found for their  belongings.  If you are coming for the winter concert, please have a look.  All remaining clothing will be given to donation on Dec 16.
